Beginning with this region's aborginal people, there are thousands of years of history to see and learn about when you vist Sunset Country. One of the area's biggest attractions and a must see is the Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre located near Stratton - just west of Fort Frances. This is hallowed ground to the local aboriginal people and is the location of ancient burial mounds that are centuries old. The site is also known as the Manitou Mounds and has a beautiful Interpretive Centre, a fish hatchery and other attractions of interest to any history buff. Discover all the legends of the past at this site unlike any other across Canada.
The towns and cities in Sunset Country are also historical attractions in themselves. Red Lake for example, has a storied mining history and a gold rush of its own that rivaled that of the Klondike. Aviation history is also a big part of Red Lake as the town is known as the "Norseman Capital of the World" and celebrates this every July at its wonderful Norseman Festival. Make sure you visit the newly constructed Heritage Centre in town to gain a real appreciation of our area's frontier roots. Dryden just 2 hours south of Red Lake is a proud forestry commmmunity and an important regional service centre. The city's development can be traced back to early pioneers who came to the area in search of a better life. This rich history is captured in pictures and displays at the Dryden Museum. Kenora on Lake of the Woods has a story to tell as a forestry and mining town and is a place you can spend a lot of time in while vacationing in the region. See the historic Mather Walls House in Keewatin or visit the famous Lake of the Woods Museum - one of the nicest museums located in Northern Ontario for those interested in the early fur trade and the opening up of the western part of the country.
